2 Reasons Why You Should Take Photos at “Golden Hour”

Maybe you’ve heard of a little something called “golden hour”. It’s actually more like an hour and a half window of time and it’s a great time of day to take photos. The coolest part is that there are two of them in a day. The first takes place right AFTER sunrise and the other is right BEFORE sunset.  We love scheduling sessions around these times of the day to get those dreamy, “golden” photos.

Here are a few reasons why it’s amazing:

  • Soft light is flattering – taking photos at “golden hour” allows you to avoid harsh shadows and instead take advantage of a soft, diffused light that exposes your subjects and the background more evenly. During the middle of the day when the sun is shining down from high in the sky, it can cast unflattering shadows on your face and body. Even if you find shade you might still have a hard time avoiding this.
  • It creates interest – when you place someone in front of the sun you might get what’s called “hair light” around them creating a glow. The soft light from golden hour altogether adds depth and warmth to your images.
